Xinhua News Agency, Guangzhou, August 20 (Reporter Yang Shenshen) — On August 19, 2026, the Cross-Strait Youth Football Exchange Tournament opened in Nansha, Guangzhou. The tournament, themed “Youth Together, Pursuing Dreams in the Bay Area,” featured seven teams in total, including four teams from Taiwan regions such as Nantou, Kaohsiung, and Yilan, with nearly one hundred participants.
Zhang Jiají, member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and former Vice Chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, said in his address that compatriots on both sides of the Strait share common roots and origins and a common linguistic and ethnic heritage. He noted that young people are the future of the nation and the hope for cross‑strait relations. He expressed the hope that youth sports exchanges across the Strait will serve as a bond, building on the sports, cultural and educational resources of the Guangdong‑Hong Kong‑Macao Greater Bay Area, and upholding the principles of “making friends through football, fostering fellowship through competition, cultural integration, and jointly building dreams with one heart.” Through these exchanges, participants can jointly experience the unique charm of Chinese sporting spirit and Lingnan culture, and together inject youthful vitality into the peaceful development of cross‑strait relations.
Nine‑year‑old student Chen from the Little Golden Lions Club in Taiwan said this was her first visit to the mainland. “The fields here are very large and excellent, and the hotels’ food is also very good. I hope to make some mainland friends.”
“The children can not only improve their football skills, but also broaden their horizons through various visits and activities, such as experiencing driverless technology, thereby promoting cultural exchange. This is particularly meaningful,” said Ms. Huang, coach of the Qubing Club from Taiwan.
The event was organized by the Association for the Promotion of Grassroots Exchanges between Compatriots on Both Sides of the Taiwan Strait. After the competition, the Taiwanese youth will further explore the Guangdong‑Hong Kong‑Macao Greater Bay Area, experiencing its strong dynamism of high‑quality development and the deep‑rooted cultural heritage of Southern Guangdong.
